Redesigning a Voucher Payment App for a Gen-Z Gaming Audience
B2C Platform • Global user research • React • iOS & Android • Gaming audience 14–20
As sole Product Designer, I led global user research and a full redesign of the Neosurf app on React (iOS & Android) — from understanding the audience to Design QA and dev support, including App Store assets.
* Due to the commercial nature of this platform, selected workflows, configurations, and business content were intentionally modified to protect sensitive business information.
About the Neosurf brand: a prepaid digital voucher that lets users pay online without needing a bank account or credit card. It's sold at over 150,000 physical and online points of sale worldwide, and accepted by more than 20,000 websites — mainly for gaming purchases like Steam, Epic Games and Google Play.
01 / Overview
The project in brief
Neosurf is a voucher payment app for a young gaming audience, needing a visual and functional upgrade to grow a base of returning users.
Scope
Home, sign-up, voucher check, send/withdraw funds, generate vouchers, settings and account.
Product
A voucher payment app for gamers aged 14–20, deployed globally.
My role
Sole product designer — research, UX/UI, QA testing, and dev support through launch, including App Store assets.
02 / Challenge
Upgrading a live product to grow a loyal user base
The goal was to upgrade an existing product and give it a distinctive, sales-driven look that invites people in, growing a base of regular, returning users. The target audience - gamers aged 14–20, worldwide - needed to complete every payment action (redeeming a voucher, transferring money in, withdrawing to a bank account, generating a voucher from inside the app) one-handed, in seconds, with minimal cognitive load and no reliance on remembering earlier steps.
Target audience
Gamers, ages 14–20, worldwide.
Core requirement
Every action — one-handed, in seconds, no cognitive load.
Business goal
Grow a loyal user base with a distinctive, sales-driven look.
-
Additional context: on many gaming platforms, teens can't open a bank account, yet they still earn money and pay for services within the platform. Physical cash also exposes them to theft and fraud risk.
-
The solution: vouchers/coupons that can be converted into money and purchased through the app, usable virtually and at physical points of sale - a store or mini-market found via an in-app map, with an agreement in place with the platform.
-
The platform approves conversion across several currencies - currently USD and EUR, with room to expand as needed.

03 / Research
Global user research
I ran user research across multiple countries, focused on the target age group: habits, emotional responses, goals, frequency of use, timing patterns, and consistency of use. The findings shaped a colorful, gaming-inspired style over a traditional fintech look.
Habits & frequency
How often and how long users engage with each action.
Emotional response
Feelings around payment and sign-up flows.
Goals & motivations
Why and when users turn to the app.
Consistency of use
Return patterns and availability over time.

Alongside the user research, leading platforms in the youth gaming space - Snapchat, Discord and Twitch - were studied to shape a strategic approach that eases the sign-up process, the first step and the one users like least, and to explore options like a 'quick view' for jumping straight into different areas of the app. The goal: a friendly environment that conveys security and ease of use, together with a modern, high-quality look.
04 / Key Decisions
From user understanding to product decisions

Visual direction
A colorful, gaming-inspired style chosen directly from research, replacing a generic fintech look.
Rebuilt onboarding
Broke one long form into 8 focused steps with a progress bar, themed illustrations, and live validation.
Home screen hierarchy
Moved from five equal-weight stacked buttons to primary tiles + shortcuts + auth actions.
Trust & safety
Phone verification and password confirmation before any transfer, plus full error/success coverage.
Quick view & fast access
Following research into platforms like Snapchat, Discord and Twitch, a 'quick view' option was added for jumping straight into key areas of the app, easing the sign-up process — the first step, and the one users like least.
05 / Before & After
From a flat stack to a clear hierarchy

06 / Product Screens
From the first screen to the first transfer
A visual overview of the key screens that turned the payment experience into a simple, clear flow.

Home screen
Action hierarchy: primary tiles, shortcuts, sign-in

Sign-up 8-step wizard
Progress bar, themed illustrations, live validation

Check voucher
Native keyboard, full success/error states

Send Funds
Phone verification, password confirmation, transfer status

Unified account dashboard
Balance, recent transactions, quick actions

Settings
Profile, language, policies and support
07 / Outcome
From a design round to a new client order
After a full round of design work, the product was presented to an international client, who was impressed by the result. This led directly to an order for an additional product and increased revenue for the company. I also carried out QA testing and worked alongside the dev team through completion, including App Store assets.
